A Thought From the Word

Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith." Proverbs 15:16,17

This passage teaches us a right valuing of things. What do we consider as precious commodities? According to God's wisdom, a reverence for and deep desire to please the one true God (fear of the Lord) is of greater value than financial "security" and the fulfillment of our desires for the things money can buy.

According to God's wisdom, a steady diet of vegetable soup accompanied by a spirit of genuine love towards God and others, is greatly superior to the richest foods if they are accompanied buy a self-serving heart void of God's love.

It is not wrong to be blessed with material things. There is no inherent virtue in poverty. It is actually right to enjoy the extras of life to God's glory. But, if we're honest, we too easily over-value those extras while under-valuing God's precious commodities.

Here is a heart-test: do you regularly and fervently pray something like this, "Lord, please give me a heart filled with a love for you above all else. Help me to be like Christ in pouring myself out in service to you and others. Don't let idols come between me and you. Don't let me live a life defined by selfishness. Please, please fill my heart with worship and awe of your greatness. And, help me more than anything else to want to please you in all I do."

Do pray for your material needs to be met. Give thanks for His provisions. But, remind your heart of those things most valuable according to God's wisdom.
