“A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.” Proverbs 20:26

A wise king does not ignore evil, but separates it from that which is good. The picture we have in this verse is of wheat being placed on a threshing floor. The workers would spread the wheat across the floor and begin the process of separating the grain from the chaff. The word scatter means to winnow or to separate. The winnowing process consisted of driving away the chaff from the grain through a fan or wind. This is also the meaning of the second half of the verse. The wheel under consideration was an instrument that was brought to the threshing floor and then used to run over the wheat in order to detach the grain from the chaff. After this happened, the wind was used to scatter the chaff. The point of the passage is that a wise king does not call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20). Well, I seriously doubt that anyone reading this devotion is a king; so what do we do with this passage? We could use it to fuel a rant about our political leaders and how they call evil good and good evil; but I don’t think the intended purpose of God’s Word is to foster a spirit of critical, fruitless complaining. So, here’s a question for us all to consider: Am I ignoring evil in my own life, or under the realm of my God given authority? God intends for there to be a distinction between good and evil, and that distinction is to be made as those who are in authority address the evil that exists in their realm of influence. Are you ignoring issues with your children that need to be addressed? What about issues with your spouse or yourself? A wise individual will separate good from evil, and then scatter the evil by dealing with it. The chaff does not separate itself from the wheat on its own; the workers must intentionally use the fan. The same is true for evil in your life; if you do not address it, it will remain with you and eventually render you useless.
