“ It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make inquiry.”
Proverbs 20:25

The passage today points out the foolishness of hasty, rash vows. The word devoureth means to speak rashly or talk wildly. The scenario Solomon gives is of one who hastily makes a vow before God, and later begins to question himself as to whether or not it is necessary to keep the vow. While this principle applies to many areas of life, the problem of the fool, is that he is driven by emotional excitement; not rational convictions. So many Christians today approach God and the worship of God as an event that is measured by how emotionally stirring the experience is in the moment. There have been many foolish vows made in a spirit of sincerity, by folks who were swept away with an emotional charge. “I’ll never watch television again” is a good example of a rash vow. The vow is not rash because there is something wrong with not watching television; it is rash because the individual making the statement is not rationally convicted from the scriptures that it is all together a sin to watch television. So, the vow is made and kept for a period of time, and then slowly the individual begins to find reasons as to why it would be ok to begin watching television again. While the Bible certainly addresses what types of things we should and should not be watching, it does not teach that watching television is a sin. However, when we make a vow before God that we will abstain from something; as soon as we compromise, it is sin. God expects us to know His Word, and to live before Him in an informed, rational way. May we approach God’s Word with the goal of understanding it; that we might know Him and live before Him in reverence.
