And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons. Mark 3:14-15
God’s choosing is a Holy thing. In this passage of Scripture we see that Christ’s appoints twelve disciples. This appointment byChrist could better be read, “And he made the twelve.” Out of nothing, just as in Genesis 1:1, Christ makes twelve men disciples. They had no qualifications. They had no resumes complete with a long list of experience. Christ made them His. It is not that we come to Christ and do Him a favor; it is that Christ overcomes our resistance, and enables us to be His. He makes us His out of nothing. The old man is not improved upon. The old man must die and there must be a new birth. This is how Christ makes a disciple.
Our passage reveals a two fold purpose in our being “made” a disciple. First, we see that Christ made them disciple “so that they might be with him…” Before being a task, Christianity is first a relationship. The eternal God, who needs nothing, makes us his in order to share Himself in relationship with us. This is awe inspiring. Before ministry, or anything else, our number one purpose in our walk should be to be with Christ.
The second reason is two-fold. First we are to preach the gospel to others. We are to demonstrate through the Word of God, how far sin has separated us from God and what Christ has done in order for men to experience salvation. This is our purpose. The second purpose of our sending is to confront evil in whatever form it takes. We do this by relying on God and speaking his Word. This is the sum of our discipleship. We are to be with Christ and go into this World as ambassadors of our great God.
