This morning we continue our series of sermons on the commandments of God. The tenth commandment is up. What does it mean “You shall not covet”? Why are we exhorted “Let your conduct be without covetousness” (Hebrews 13:5a)? Why does the Apostle confess that he “would not have known lust (KJV) except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet” (Romans 7:7b). Is the Catechism perhaps too harsh, or right on, when it describes God’s will for us in the tenth commandment as requiring “that not even the slightest thought or desire contrary to any one of God’s commandments should ever arise in my heart. Rather, with all my heart I should always hate sin and take pleasure in whatever is right”? Let us hear God’s Word on this, and this morning from the perspective of Jesus’ own lesson to the rich young ruler. This rich and moral man seems to have had a problem with covetousness. Do we? Let us hear the gospel solution, and learn from the good God our Savior and Master, just what is the gospel response!
