“Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just." Luke 14:12-14

It is one thing to serve people who can serve you back. It is one thing to perform for someone else, with the expectation that they may perform back for you. In the church in fact, mutual service is a command to practice and a blessing to be received.

However, if all our service and ministering is just to the desirable or attractive, there is a big gap in our ministering. Furthermore, if our motive in serving is for selfish reward, we've missed the point altogether. Christian work can sometimes be exciting and invigorating. It is a blessing when that can be so.

But it will also be to non-attractive people and without loud, excitable bells and whistles. Jesus here teaches to give of ourselves for the good of others. To serve even those who we may not be comfortable with or who cannot seem to be able to personally enrich us. This is, in fact, what Jesus did. He did not come to give grace to those who would add some worth to Him, rather He lavished His grace on those made supremely unattractive by sin.
