A Thought From the Word
“In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. I Kings 3:5
We don't fully know our own hearts. Imagine God did to you what He did to Solomon here. No church people around to observe. A private moment between you and God and God asks you what you want. What would your heart ask Him for?
Some of us might ask that our mortgage be paid off instantly. Some might pray that nothing bad would happen in their lives, just that everything would be smooth and calm. Still others might ask that their children might turn out "well", meaning top-notch education, upper-middle class or better lifestyle and as much of the American Dream as possible.
The truth is, God knows what is in our hearts. But, He wants us to think seriously about what is in our hearts. I believe the closer we get to God and the more we are shaped by His word, the more we realize how deceitful and corrupt our hearts really are. This should move us to love our Savior even more for His forgiveness and to make frequent trips to the throne of grace.
The good news is, there is a throne of grace! We can come to God asking that He might tune our hearts to the point that our deepest longings and desires would be for things like: wisdom and understanding (what Solomon asked for), a heart of humility, obedience, contentment, love, and faith. Most of all, that we would want Him, His presence, fellowship and grace in our lives.
