1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. We live in a society that is always telling us that we need more. The pressure is to have more, be more, use more - more is the word of our generation. But the Bible tells us that godliness with contentment is the real gain in life. With our desire to have more why do we shy away from seeking after more godliness with contentment in our lives? It seems that the trend of our age is ungodliness and a restlessness for more stuff! The stuff does not bring contentment and neither will ungodliness satisfy anyone.
I read a story one time of a rich industralist who was out fishing and noticed a fisherman sitting lazily beside his boat. "Why aren't you fishing?" asked the industralist. "Because I've caught enough fish for today," said the fisherman. "Why don't you catch more fish," the rich man asked. "What would I do with them?" asked the fisherman. The rich man became frustrated trying to reason with the man and in angered tone said, "You could earn more money and buy a better boat so that you could go deeper and catch more fish. You could purchase nylon nets, catch even more fish, and make even more money. Soon you'd have a fleet of boats and be rich like me." "Then what would I do?" inquired the fisherman. "Then you could sit down and enjoy life," said the industralist. "That's what I'm doing right now!" the fisherman replied as he looked out to the sea.
So many times we can't enjoy life because of the "more factor" of life. The next two verses of Paul's writing states,
1 Timothy 6:7-8 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
Enjoy today; it is the day that God has made for you!
Psalms 118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
