“When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.” Proverbs 18:3

This passage is one of several that demonstrate the logical, normal conclusion of beginning a certain path. James 1 does this with the thought life: unrestrained lust produces sin; unrestrained sin produces death. The starting place in today’s verse should be familiar – Wickedness. Every human being was born wicked. The verse traces the path of what happens when either that wickedness is not restrained or when the wicked nature is unchanged. This last part, the wicked nature being radically changed, is called salvation. It is the miraculous work of grace to change the vile heart to a God-loving one. Even in this blessed condition, there remains the need to restrain our wicked flesh. Without daily restraint brought about through walking in submission and obedience to God, the path is clear and it is painful. When wickedness is brought to fruition, then comes contempt. There is contempt for wisdom. This pattern of contempt leads to ignominy or shame, and with shame, the bitter pill of reproach. Don’t be deceived. Contempt for God’s word always has consequences, consequences that we cannot choose but are clearly outlined for us.
