Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 18:4

“The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.” Proverbs 18:4

When I read this passage, my thoughts automatically go to Jesus’ words in Matthew 12:34 – “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.” While several things could be said about our passage today, I want to point out a simple but important truth. Our words and thoughts are not chosen on a whim, but are reserved in the deep waters of our hearts, waiting to be expressed. This is important for at least two reasons. The first one is, when we do not exercise self-control and our words get out of hand, it is always inaccurate and unbiblical to back pedal and pretend as if you did not mean what you said. The truth of the matter is, when we allow ourselves to lose control, it is out of the abundance (or deep waters) of the heart, that our mouths speak. In other words, those nasty words have been brewing in the depths of internal bitterness for a while. It can be very embarrassing for our pettiness to be exposed, but do not let us play games by trying to pretend as if our expression of depravity is an unusual accident. The other truth that I would like to point out is that we will never accidentally become wise. Now, we may accidentally make a wise decision, or stumble across wise words every now and then, but those who are known as being wise are consistently making wise decisions. If we are not storing up wisdom, we cannot expect to automatically become wise. As a matter of fact, when we are on auto pilot, we will always tend to drift towards foolishness. What are you storing up in your heart today? May we honor God, by esteeming His Word and storing it in our hearts.
