“A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.” Proverbs 17:25

This is a truth that Solomon rewords many times throughout the book of Proverbs. It is, at its core, a reminder that we are not an island all to ourselves, and our choices affect those we love. While this should not be the ultimate reason that anyone pursues wisdom, it should definitely be a factor. Motivation comes on many different levels, and for many different purposes. I can remember several years ago, my pitiful attempt to run/walk/sloth my way through a half marathon. My ultimate goal and motivating factor was to complete the race. The thought of the finish line kept me going many times when I wanted to stop. However, there were times in my exhaustion, when the finish line wasn’t so inspirational or motivating. In these times it was the cheer section on the side of the road that kept me moving. There is nothing like appropriate encouragement to keep us going when we are losing steam. This is a “cheer section” type of motivation to continue to pursue wisdom. In a very real way, the pursuit of wisdom is the road to loving your neighbor as yourself.
