Eph 4:1-3 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. If you're like me, when I think of my calling as a Christian, my thoughts are, "What am I called to DO for God?" The answers may include, "I'm called to preach," or "I'm called to go to the mission field," or maybe "I'm called to sing!" All of these may be true, but the emphasis in our minds are focused on, "What am I to DO!"
But God's calling in His mind is not focused on WHAT we DO but WHO we ARE! In verse 1 we are told to walk worthy of our calling, and then the following verses (2,3) God focuses not on the outward DOING, but the inward BEING! God is always more interested in who we are than what we do. Doing is good, but if done in the wrong spirit or the wrong attitude, who gets any glory? The worthy walk in Ephesians 4 begins with who we are then moves to what we do.
I heard a preacher say one time that God does not care so much as to what we do, but rather He cares about why we do what we do. In the gospels, Jesus did what He did because of who He was! What He did in no way shaped who He was. Who He was caused Him to do the things that He did.
We are Christians, called to be Christ-like! Not to be imitators (that's what actors do!) but to express the life of Christ through our lives. 2Co 4:10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
1Jo 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
"Who are you?"
