“Righteous lips are the delight of kings: and they love him that speaketh right.” Proverbs 16:13
I don’t know for sure when Solomon penned this thought. Perhaps it was late in his life as he looked back over his tenure as king. As a powerful figure, he had much experience with people advising him on important matters. He also encountered those seeking to gain influence with him. His conclusion was that only those who speak truth are helpful. Think of all the thoughts often used to avoid speaking truth:
I don’t want to hurt them.
I just want them to be happy.
It’s none of my business.
They will resent me if I say what I really think.
The list could go on and on. This is not a call to rudeness or becoming a busybody. But it is a call to commit to always speaking truth in love. God has given you the truths of His word not for you to bury it but to use it to minister to others. Flattery and deceit never ministers grace. Truth in love is the grace that God has given you to minister.
