We probably all have a picture in our minds of what greed looks like. It looks like the investor who swindles his contributors out of millions, or it looks like the trusted secretary we read about in the news who slowly and systematically skims a little off the top right under her employers nose. The funny thing about these pictures, however, is that they never include us. Scripture never takes its aim at an irrelevant target. Greed is found in the man who functionally forsakes his family to advance his career. It is seen in the wife who worries obsessively over the budget. It is evident in the silent jealousy over the prosperity of others. It is seen in the craving for the latest technological gadget. The real issue with greed is also the answer for overcoming greed. Greed is all about the treasure of our hearts. When our greatest treasure is the feeling of security, our hearts give way to anxiety or discontentment. When our greatest treasure is Christ, and our security is found in His love, our hearts are drawn toward contentment and trust in His provision. There is a daily, even moment by moment need, to remind ourselves of Christ, the greatest treasure.
