As we have begun our ascent through the psalms of degrees we have seen the psalmist begin his spiritual climb to victory. First he truthfully acknowledged the sad plight he was in, and asked the Lord to help him. Secondly, he fixed his eyes in the right direction, toward "the hills from whence cometh my help." Thirdly he joined God's people and started in the right direction headed into the house of God.
As we come to Psalm 123 we see similarities to Psalm 121! He has to refocus again! He has to lift up his eyes higher! What's wrong? He has already lifted his eyes in Psalm 121 to a place, but now he looks higher than the hills, to heaven, to a person. He looks to that One who dwells in the heavens. When you look to, and go to the house of God you will find that they will point you to the only One who can help, the Lord. When the struggling child of God gets focused on Him, he will find help.
In two of the four psalms we have discussed the psalmist deals with the eyes and the direction they are looking. I do not think this is coincidence! The direction of our eyes is of utmost importance if we are to experience spiritual victory. The Bible tells us in Lamentations 3.51 the eye affecteth the heart. The devil knows this and so get ready, he is going to try to get your focus off of the Lord, and on ungodliness. Therefore it is of the utmost importance that when we realize we have an eye problem, we immediately seek to correct it in order to protect our heart (in Proverbs 4.23 we are admonished to keep our heart with all diligence) and ensure spiritual victory. With the Lord's help we must focus not just upon the local church, but it's head, the Lord Jesus Christ
Dear saint be sure you are looking up, and not out or down !
