“Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walketh uprightly.” Proverbs 15:21
There is an old hymn that includes an odd but powerful phrase. The phrase is “solid joys.” It is in understanding the concept of solid joy that wisdom is found. As humans, we have the capacity to take pleasure from many different things. And many of the things we find pleasure in are good if enjoyed in moderation and balance. God has given all things to us richly to enjoy. Some enjoy the competition and rivalry of athletics while others enjoy crafting something with their own hands. This is all fine and good if there is also the understanding that there is no solid joy to be found here. Solid joy is a mind and soul at rest with God. It is the understanding that nothing I experience or pursue in life compares to intimacy and peace with my Maker. This understanding and desire for solid joy inevitably will influence everything else I pursue in life. I will not make my team or my hobby a functional god because I know the highest pleasure is not found there. Solid joy is lasting joy. The quest for solid joy is a quest for the Highest, for the best. Think about that! Walking uprightly is really not a sacrifice. It is the refusal of that which cannot satisfy for the embrace of the One who fully satisfies!
