Part of the genius of Solomon’s wisdom is found in his ability to bring crystal clear perspective. Often, this crystal clear perspective is shocking. The vast majority of people have tender affection for mothers. Yes, your mother might get on your nerves on occasion, but the good far outweighs the negative. If accused of hating our mother, we would probably ball up our fists preparing to fight. And yet, this is exactly what Solomon accuses the fool of – despising your mother. Foolishness is manifested in two main ways:

1) charting our own course for life, and
2) ignoring Godly counsel.
