Have you ever witnessed a toddler temper tantrum? The fists are swinging, the spit is flying, the resolve is great, but it is completely pointless. A toddler doesn’t have the strength to forcefully get his way or conquer his much larger foe. Adults and others who should know better sometimes resemble the foolish toddler. We stubbornly continue with sinful activity, putting up false fronts, insisting that everything is A-ok. The problem is that others are rarely fooled, and God is never fooled! This principle is what this passage argues. If the unseen world (hell, death, the grave) is known perfectly by God, it therefore follows that the seen world is no different. The seen world includes the planning room in Washington, Beijing, Iran, North Korea, and every other seat of world power. It also includes every computer screen, earbud, text message, computer chat, and phone conversation. It includes the tiny cells in the body that form cancer, the aching heart, the lonely hour, and the dreaded fear. In his forgotten anguish, Job remembered, “He knoweth the way that I take.” Child of God, if you are behaving as the angry toddler, persisting in a futile war, give up. There is a rest for your soul, but it is found in openness and surrender to a God who cannot be deceived. Child of God, if you are convinced that no one knows or cares about the hurt in your heart, rest in the One who not only knows but is determined to bring you forth as gold.
