I have been considering the latest uproar over the homosexuality debate that began with Phil Robertson's comments in his GQ interview. One commenter made the statement that it's no secret what Christian's believe about homosexuality, yet when one comments on the subject, the world is surprised and appalled. That's my paraphrase, and I have read so much over the last week that I can't even remember where I saw this, but it is a valid point that perhaps needs to be considered. Why is it that so many seem surprised when Christians openly espouse their worldview and apply it to the debate over homosexuality? The panel discussion on Piers Morgan's show that featured Dr. Michael Brown opened my eyes to at least one of the issues with this problem. (Sidenote: I've linked to it and you should watch to see how a Christian can and should respond to the arguments from this crowd.) As the reinterpretation of the Bible were voiced by the "liberals" on the panel, it became apparent what has happened.
The liberal media doesn't look at the discussion and see Christians upholding their proper understanding of the Bible. What the left instead sees are two groups of Christians. The first group is the liberal branch of Christianity that has capitulated to the homosexual agenda and redefined proper biblical interpretation in order to allow it. On the other hand is the second group of conservative Christians who continue to uphold the right interpretation of Scripture.
Therefore, for the media, they are not simply looking at the "backwoods fundamentalists" and wondering why they believe the way that they do. They are looking at the second group of Christians and are confused as to why they can't be as progressive as the first group of Christians.
And therein lies the rub. The battle lines are being drawn, but it's the wrong side drawing them. It's time for men in the church to boldly stand against these pseudo-definitions of Christianity. True Christians submit to the clear teaching of Scripture, and they don't redefine Scriptural terms in order to justify the lusts of their flesh. The second group, the liberal side, cannot be allowed to define terms like Christian or interpretation. They gave up that right long ago, but the liberal media will continue to cling to them as partners in their own passions and desires.
It's time men. Their gloves are off, and they have come to fight. We need soldiers, not hair stylists. We need fighters, not limp wristed "unity police" who would rather sing Kum-Ba-Yah than quote Leviticus 18:22.
