Book Recommendation: All Loves Excelling
All Loves Excelling: The Saints' Knowledge of Christ's Love. By John Bunyan. Banner of Truth: Carlisle, 1692, 1998. All Loves Excelling is an exposition of part of Paul's prayer for the Ephesians recorded in Eph 3:18-19. He prays the believers "may have the strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
In typical Puritan fashion, Bunyan gives these two verses a thorough and exhaustive treatment with extensive use of Scripture for illustration and explanation - and it is well worth the reading!
He expounds on what is meant by Paul using the four measurements of breadth, length, height, and depth to describe how far reaching and how extensive is the scope of God's love for the believer in Christ. Particularly interesting and encouraging was Bunyan's explanation of how we are to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge!
This one is for every believer. It will lift up the downhearted and ground the strong hearted. Searching the extent of Christ's love for us nourishes love for Christ within us! It will truly, as Paul prayed, fill you up with all the fullness of God!
