"The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death." Proverbs 14:27
As we look once again at the “fear of the Lord”, I want to remind you that we could rephrase it as: “obedience to the Lord” is a fountain of life. This fountain of life is said to help us turn away from the snares of death. This is what the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia says about snares: It was a noose of hair for small birds, of wire for larger birds or smaller animals. The snares were set in a favorable location and grain scattered to attract the attention of feathered creatures. They accepted the bribe of good feeding and walked into the snare, not suspecting danger. The two points I want to mention about snares are:
1. They are made to look attractive rather than dangerous
2. They are intended to trap for the purpose of destruction.
Could it be that our foolishness fuels our confidence in believing that we are safe when we are only a step away from destruction? The fear of the Lord does not ignore wisdom, but embraces it. On the same hand, the fear of the Lord does not ignore danger, but avoids it. Only God can lead us safely through the mine field of life that would destroy us if we were left to ourselves. Praise God for His mercy, and cling to His Word.
