A Thought From the Word

And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the altar, and offer thy sin offering, and thy burnt offering, and make an atonement for thyself, and for the people: and offer the offering of the people, and make an atonement for them; as the LORD commanded.” Leviticus 9:7

Aaron was the first high priest of Israel. In many ways, we see him as a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ. Aaron represented the nation before God. He offered sacrifices to God for the sins of the people. Even some of his garb, such as the names of the tribes of Israel worn in a breastplate over his heart, picture the love of Christ in bearing our names before God.

In the above verse, however, we see a way in which Aaron did not picture Christ. Aaron was high priest, but he was still a sinner before a holy God. Because of this, God required Aaron to offer a sacrifice for his own sins before he would offer one for Israel’s sins.

The great high priest of every believer, Jesus Christ, did no such thing! He was not a sinner trying to help other sinners. No, He was the perfect, in the absolute sense, representative of His people. Jesus Christ was the pure, spotless, undefiled Lamb of God who took on our defilement and iniquity. He offered only one sacrifice, for His people, that abolished their sins forever. Praise God for a high priest superior to Aaron!
