“The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.” Proverbs 13:14
The word law is more easily understood in this passage by the concept of teaching. The words flowing from his mouth are compared to a fountain. In the case of the wise teacher, they are a fountain of life. In the book of James, we are reminded that a fountain can only produce one kind of water. It cannot be sweet in one moment and bitter in the next. While humans are fallible and prone to errors in judgment, the security in surrounding oneself with consistently wise teaching is a tremendous blessing. It has been said many times but is worth repeating – Who we choose to surround ourselves with is one of the most important decisions we make in life. I am thankful to know wise men and women that I have absolute assurance that whatever the topic, consistently wise words will flow that produce life.
