"The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out." Proverbs 13:9

This is yet another way of saying what has been said so many times as we have gone through the book of Proverbs. If we just look at Chapters 12&13, we find the same principle several times (12:7, 13:3 & 13:6). John Newton, in his hymn Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken, put it this way: “Solid joys and lasting pleasures, none but Zion’s children know.” While light and lamp could be interpreted to mean many different things if we were to get into specifics, I think the overall general meaning of these two word pictures, is a pursuit of joy. The light of the righteous keeps on rejoicing. We might even say that the lifestyle of the righteous produces and perpetuates joy. However, the lifestyle of the wicked, while it may produce momentary pleasures and comfort, will ultimately end in misery. The wicked have no joy. They might be happy (feel good) for a while, but they have nothing to anchor their hopes in or to rejoice in outside of themselves and the basest pleasures of the flesh. This temporary happiness will come to an end; it always does. However, the light of righteous living will shine brighter and brighter. It may not always feel good, but the hope and of the righteous and their source of joy, never changes. Where is your light today?
