What To Do with the White Spaces in the Bible

You know what "white space" I'm referring to. It's the little space between the verses in our Bibles. Most of the time, there's nothing there to think about. The previous verse moves right into the following verse, and nothing is missing, or has been intentionally left out. The story flows, the logic flows. It all fits and makes perfect sense.

However, there are those times that ii appears much is left unsaid in the "white space." Upholding the inspiration and authority of Scripture, there are reasons, good reasons, for this. God hasn't revealed everything. He has done so intentionally. We don't need to know everything that happens, behind the scenes or in the scenes! We can't possibly know everything anyway.

So why bring this up?

We came across a glaring white space this past Sunday during our study of Psalm 13. It cannot be denied that a remarkable change of heart and faith occurs in David between v4 and v5. He moves from despairing faith to rejoicing faith. He moves from crying "How long, O Lord?" in vv1-2 to singing to the Lord in v6.

So what happened in the white space?

God happened! God answered David's prayer of vv4-5. God considered. God answered. God lifted up David’s eyes! God heard and God moved and God revived, restored, refreshed, renewed the heart and the faith of His servant! There’s a miracle there. It’s invisible. It’s not written or recorded, but it’s there nonetheless!

Now, one must be careful in preaching on the white spaces!! One must be careful to not put in the Bible what is not in the Bible. It's dangerous to put words in God's mouth!! We don't exegete the white space!

But, here, here in this psalm, there is such a drastic transformation in David’s faith, in David’s disposition, there is no doubt, the invisible hand of God has lavished grace upon His child!

I think that’s precisely why its in the white space. You can’t see God move. His Spirit moves like the wind, unseen yet undeniable. The evidence that God has been on the scene in this psalm, in answer to David's pleading and praying, is undeniable too. He didn’t forget David (v1). He didn’t hide His face (v1). He didn’t leave David alone (v2). And David’s enemies who fight against God will not prevail either (v2).

So what do you do with the white space? You don't try to "fill in the blank" but you don't deny the grace of God either. God hears and answers the prayers of His people. God grants much needed faith and grace and mercy. God gives daily bread. That's the point of Psalm 13! It's right there in black and white!
