Proverbs provides great insight into the nature of God. For example, we read in I John that God is light with no hint of darkness. But we struggle to really grasp what it means to be full of light and completely void of darkness. This is the very reason that we tend to brush off sin as not being that big of a deal. But this passage in Proverbs explains what it means to be full light. A dishonest balance, no matter how small the adjustment, is abomination to the Lord. This means that if I misstate my income just a little to fall into a more favorable tax burden, that is disgusting to God. It means that if I have contracted to work 8 hours/day, and I spend just 10 minutes of that 8 hours wasting time, then that 10 minutes is disgusting to God. The examples of a false balance are endless, and they are real in our lives. We protest, “Come on, that 10 minutes is not that big of a deal compared to how much time others waste,” but God is not comparing us to any other standard than Himself. Only a just weight is delight to God. Where does this leave us? It leaves us in desperate need of constant grace. We need grace to cover our false balances, and we need grace to present a just weight in every area of our life.
