In Exodus 33:18 Moses asked the Lord: “I beseech Thee, show me Thy glory.” And the Lord answered Moses in verse 19by saying: “I will make all My goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.”
God’s greatest glory is His ability to show mercy to sinners. He is a Just God, and will by no means clear the guilty. (Ex. 34:7) And because all men and women have sinned, no man or woman will go unpunished. But God is able to make all of His goodness pass before sinners by proclaiming the name of the Lord Jesus Christ before them. God will be gracious to whom He will be gracious through the gift of His Son. God the Father gave His own Son as a sacrifice for the sin of His people. And because He poured out His wrath on His Son - with all judgment and justice being satisfied through the suffering of His Son - God is able to show mercy on whom He will show mercy. The cross of the Lord Jesus Christ is God’s greatest glory!
