“As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.” Proverbs 10:25

No one enjoys thinking about death. Death is cruel. Death is painful. Death is final. Death is universal. But the wise will ponder both the certainty of death and its consequences. The after effect of Adam’s transgression is that every new born enters the world with a sentence of death. No matter how much security a person builds into their life, there is no security that can prevent death. But death is not only certain. The consequences of death are stunning. Death is like a tornado. I remember standing in a field in Smithville, Mississippi in 2011. It was clear that something had once occupied this field because there was a driveway that led to a few brick steps. But the steps lead to nowhere. A few days before, those steps led to a door that opened into a beautiful home. But the whirlwind had passed through the field, and nothing was left of the home except memories. This is death’s curse upon the wicked. Every attainment, every endeavor, every joy – will be erased by death.

For the righteous, however, death has lost its power to destroy. Jesus died to reverse the curse of death. He died as a substitute, bearing our sins, propitiating justice, ransoming His children from the strangle hold of death. His victory over the grave is our personal guarantee that death cannot erase life. Instead, death is the usher into eternal life in Jesus Christ for those bought by His blood. The resurrection insures that life has meaning. It insures that life endures. It insures that the life of faith will not be snatched away. Instead, we by faith lay up treasures in heaven, treasures that endure. What is the foundation on which your life is built?
