Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 10:4,5

“He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.” Proverbs 10:4,5

This passage is a warning against laziness. Laziness leads to both poverty and shame. We live in a culture that caters to laziness. Cordless phones are now equipped with automated voice identity capability so that not only do you not have to get out of your chair to answer the phone on the wall, you don’t even have to lift your hand to pick up the phone to find out who is calling. Now, there is certainly nothing wrong with this convenience. But, the larger point remains. We, who are conditioned by nature to put out the least amount of work possible to achieve desired results, are inundated with devices to encourage laziness.

One of the leading factors in laziness is the misconception of time. People tend to think that there is an infinite length of time to accomplish responsibilities. The result is that life is lived with little urgency. The slothful do not gather food for winter in summer because there is plenty to eat in summer, and the thought is that there will be plenty of time later to gather food for winter. Shockingly, when winter comes, there are no crops left in the field, and the slothful shamefully has to beg for food. Isn’t this lazy mindset a constant battle in other areas of life? As a parent, I have many things that I want to teach my children, but if I make the mistake of thinking that there is no urgency because there is an infinite bank of time to teach them, I probably will never get around to teaching them. We also tend to take a lazy approach to studying God’s Word for the same reason. Urgency surrenders to laziness because time is undervalued. Here is the truth: The only certainty regarding time is this very moment! What are you doing with this moment? Are you urgently gathering for winter? Are you faithfully imparting wisdom to your children? Are you investing in others’ lives today? Are you diligent in studying Gods’ word? The answer to these questions directly relates to your belief about time.
