There began to evolve in the church after the days of Jesus and the apostles, the idea that the apostles had successors.
Well, true and false. The apostles laid hands on men and they received the Holy Spirit. The apostles laid hands on men, and they were healed. The apostles laid hands on men and they became elders and leaders.
BUT, no apostle ever created an apostle. Apostles were not created by men. Only God can make an apostle. (Galatians 1:1, I Timothy 1:1) Remember the movie called "The Apostle"? A man running from justice, but who loves the Lord in some measure, baptizes himself in a river and then calls himself an apostle.
Impossible. We cannot call ourselves, nor can men call us, apostles.
Men do not even have to approve us if we are truly apostles! Just look at the trouble Paul received from the church! Many believed he was false. But it didn't bother him. He had heard the Voice of God. Jesus had called him. That's what it takes to be a true apostle.
So the whole Roman idea that today we have men descended from apostles and who therefore are in a sense apostles now, is fraudulent. The life of Jesus is passed on, but not the foundational apostolic office.
Remember that wall! Twelve men, Twelve foundations.
Over 600 years after the church began, along came Muhammad. Yes, the Koran says he is an apostle, and that in fact every prophet of God is an apostle. And the Koran will name for you many Old Testament men, and many men that no one ever heard of, and tell you they were apostles.
I mention Islam because Islam claims that their religion is merely a continuation of the one true religion, of which Christians and Jews are a part. Abraham was a Muslim, and Jesus, and all your favorite Bible characters. And all these men were apostles too.
No. Muhammad was a false prophet and a false apostle. It is easy to identify him. John, a true apostle, said that he who denies the Son does not have the Father either.
In fact, Muhammad denied the fatherhood of God and the Son-ship of Jesus, proving that Allah is not the God of your Bible, but a God created in the mind of Muhammad or in the pit of hell, or both. Muhammad and Islam are a form of anti-Christ.
But Muslims were not the last religion to claim apostleship. Joseph Smith and the Mormons in 1835 organized the Mormon Church with 12 new apostles. There is an apostolic Council in Utah to this day. Wouldn't it be interesting to hear a Mormon arguing with a Muslim about religions that start with supposed angelic manifestations?
How do I know the Mormon leaders are not true apostles of the true Jesus?
A quick look at the teachings of the new "apostles" compared to the old is all it takes. Mormonism teaches that God the Father has a body of flesh and bones, that He is just "a" god, one of three gods (Father, Son, Spirit). They also teach that Jesus is a creation of God, like Adam or the angels. We know that Jesus is God, and came forth from God as God Himself, to us, in human form. Mormonism is blasphemously different, regardless of their attempts to cover all this today.
Not Just Romanism, Islam, Mormonism. There are apostles everywhere today! Look at some of the church directories right here in Chicago and you will see not only Elder Smith and Deacon Jones but Apostle this or that...
So many ways to go astray, and so many shepherds to lead you from the main Path, the Narrow Way.
