“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.” Proverbs 9:9, 10

It has been often said, and I believe correctly, that we will continue to learn for all of eternity. Heaven will be filled with continuing revelations of the perfections of God. If this is true, shouldn’t it also follow that we should continue to be actively learning for as long as we live on earth? Education should not end upon graduation. Sadly, this is the pattern that many follow. People form opinions on life – religion, politics, family-and from the moment the opinion is formed, it is set in stone, ironclad.

However, this is not the pattern of the wise. The wise person realizes that he needs more wisdom.

The wise understands that he continues to be ignorant of many things and seeks to learn more.

Today, I received a text message from a brother who was excited about something he had read about the nature of God. This individual already has a reasonable grasp of God and theology, but wisely, his desire to continue to learn has not abated. In reality, this thirst to learn is a sign of humility. The humble person does not arrogantly claim to be fully informed. My maternal grandfather was a great example of this thirst for understanding. Literally, to his dying day, he spent his time studying and memorizing God’s Word. He was consumed with understanding God and His ways better. He would tackle issues that were confusing to him, and he would not turn them loose until he had a better grasp of them. According to Solomon, this is the picture of a wise man.
