“Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith. ” I Thessalonians 3:7 Pastor Paul, being away from the Thessalonians, was concerned that their faith was wavering because of the persecution they were experiencing as new believers in Christ. He was so concerned that he sent Timothy to minister to them (3:1, 2). But Timothy came back with a great report—their faith in Christ continued on through the adversity! This brought great comfort and joy to Paul. What lesson is here for us?
One is, though our faith and endurance is primarily God-ward, it still can be a powerful blessing to our family in Christ. It is not that God’s people are always perfect sufferers (see Job and Jeremiah), but when that clinging to Christ is maintained it is a strength to fellow saints. It is not that they were super-humans who weren’t bothered by trouble. No, they practiced faith—which is, confidence in God and His word and a leaning upon His sufficiency.
Lord, increase our faith!
