Unconditional Forgiveness
I was reading this week a message written by a late preacher who is revered and quoted by both ‘sovereign grace’ and ‘free will’ preachers. After reading the message on forgiveness of sins, it was all the more apparent to me why both types could quote him. In essence, they both believe that forgiveness is conditioned on the sinner coming, trusting, believing, or repenting first, and then God granting forgiveness of sins in return. To quote from the preacher’s message, ‘He is so ready to forgive, let us be ready to be forgiven. Let us not leave this [subject], though the midnight hour is about to strike, until we have received this great redemption, this great forgiveness…there is pardon to be obtained by believing.’ The cart has been put before the horse! The sinner’s believing is NOT what obtains a pardon from God. It is rather the Savior’s doing and dying that has obtained the pardon, and the sinner is brought by the Spirit to believe the One in whom that pardon was obtained fully and freely. Colossians 2:14 declares, ‘In whom we HAVE redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins.’ In the work of the CROSS, the Lord Jesus obtained eternal redemption, justification, reconciliation and life eternal for each sinner for whom He died, Hebrews 9:12. Forgiveness full, free and final was accomplished there at the CROSS, Colossians 2:13,14. Faith is the unconditional gift of the Spirit to see the One who died and paid the debt.
