â€˜SAME SEX CEREMONIES BLASTED.â€™

A Free Presbyterian Minister in Londonderry has lambasted the new Civil Partnerships Legislation that will allow same sex couples the same rights as married couples.

The first ceremonies in the UK under the Civil Partnerships Act can take place in the province on 19 December.

Londonderry will be holding the first such ceremony. Under the law, couples who want to form a partnership must register their intentions with local councils.

Ian Brown, Free Presbyterian Minister said that Christians will look at the legislation with a mixture of "horror and dismay".

He damned it as a "wicked parody of a divinely-established institution".

A statement from Rev Brown read: "Homosexuality ... is a perversion of God's intended function for male and female.

"Men are not meant to be romantic partners for men, nor are women for women. To call a union of two persons of the same sex a "marriage" (or to confer upon it parity with marriage in the form of a 'civil partnership') is perverse.

â€œThe pictures beamed into our living rooms of the loving, caring â€˜gay coupleâ€™ who want to both 'celebrate their love for each other' (and 'protect their legal rights' through the vehicle of this Civil Partnership Act) cut no ice with God.

â€œHis verdict is that sodomites know nothing about love, but instead share 'vile affections' (the terms employed in Romans 1:26, where the word translated 'vile' means 'filthy, dirty, evil and dishonourable').

"Only a return to biblical principles will safeguard the future of our nation and rescue it from moral catastrophe."

Reacting to Rev Brown's statement Sean Morrin of The Rainbow Project said that while he respected that everyone has a right their own opinion, religion should not be used as a reason to inflict hatred.

He said: "Mr. Brown should not be using religion as a weapon to inflict his own discrimination against a particular section of the community.

"He sends out a dangerous message and he needs to take responsibility for the damage that this is doing to our young people.

â€œl wish that he, as a Christian, would come and see the damage it does. If he had to visit psychiatric hospitals and talk to young people who want to end their life maybe he would think twice before spreading a hateful message.

"He is contributing to homophobia and he calls that a Christian?"

Mr Morrin also said that the new legislation should be celebrated by the entire community.

"I think that the strength of a society is measured by how they treat the minority groups and this week a minority group gained equal rights. Everyone should be celebrating that."
