â€˜MINISTER'S HORROR AT CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS'

As the legislation on civil partnerships becomes law today, a Free Presbyterian minister has said that people against the unions viewed it with a "mixture of horror and dismay".

From today, the Civil Partnership Act allows same sex couples to sign an official document in front of the registrar and two witnesses.

The act does not use the term 'gay marriage' but civil partnerships are clearly as close to a marriage contract as possible. Among the rights, civil partners will enjoy the right to inherit a partner's estate, pension rights and paternal responsibility for each other's children. Partners will even be able to dissolve the agreement in the form of divorce.

However, Rev lan Brown, from the Government and Morals Committee of the Free Presbyterian Church, last night criticised the new legislation.

"Those who value the sanctity and uniqueness of marriage view the civil partnership legislation that has been foisted upon our country with a mixture of horror and dismay," he said.

"No matter what deceptive packaging is used to present it, this new legislation granting homosexuals almost identical rights as married couples - is 'gay marriage' in all but name.

"As such, it is a wicked parody of a divinely-established institution."

Rev Brown added: "Men are not meant to be romantic partners for men, nor are women for women. To call a union of two person of the same sex a 'marriage' is perverse.â€

â€œWhile the civil government or some compromised clergymen may confer a blessing on a homosexual union, it is evident God will not."

However, David McCartney, from the Rainbow Project, said the rights of the minority had to be protected.

"We have heard a lot of talk that the majority of people are opposed to this but it is not about what they want," he said.

"It is about protecting the rights of the minority and giving them democracy.

"This is not a marriage but it is a move towards equality - but there still are differences.

"But we have to protect the right of the minority.â€
