“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto Thee; for Thou art the Lord our God .” Jeremiah 3:22 What this verse describes is what we call repentance. Repentance is what happens when God first conquers a human heart and turns one from self and sin to Christ. But, repentance should be continually present in the life of a believer. This passage highlights the incredible mercy of God in calling us to repentance. He could just leave us to our own foolish mistakes, but He calls us back and promises healing.
The word ‘return’ is the key. To return means to change your course. If I’m traveling towards New York and decide to come back home, I turn my back on New York and head back south. Is there anything in your life that you need to turn your back on? Pride? Envy? Selfishness? A dark and secret sin you don’t want anyone to know about?
The latter part of the verse is what our response should be. It’s saying, “Here I come, Lord. You are my salvation, forgiveness and strength.” Return! Turn your back on your sins and head straight for the loving, healing arms of your Heavenly Father.
