How Are They To Believe? - Romans 10: 14

Beloved,

The first area under consideration is how does one believe in the gospel? Although this is the second facet that Paul mentions, it is in fact the first area under consideration here in that it addresses the need for knowledge. Paul’s answer is that one cannot believe in something he is not knowledgeable of or more specifically “of whom they have not heard?” What is in play is that belief by necessity requires some degree of knowledge or understanding in the thing believed in. One cannot believe in the existence of a chair if one has never seen or understood the concept of a chair. Although true that one may not fully know how chairs work or who makes them or what life is or is not without them, they none-the-less must have some sort of knowledge about chairs before any belief in chairs can be employed; that is, they are willing to sit down in one. In contrast, one simply cannot believe in something they have no knowledge of anymore than one would be expected to embrace willfully the employment of a chair when the concept is previously unknown to that person.
What Paul is saying is that one cannot believe in Christ as the Savior when they have not heard of Him or have any knowledge of Him. It should be pointed out however, that ignorance of Christ as the Savior does not relieve those who do not know of Him of their responsibility before God for the willful transgression of His Law. Sinful man is held responsible before God whether or not they know of Christ. The full discussion of this point cannot be taken up here but it does seem that the apostle intends to communicate the necessity of the Christian’s witness freely and openly to as many as are encountered. Why would such a necessity be laid upon believers? Certainly, because without the knowledge of Christ, men cannot and will not believe in Him for the salvation of their souls.
