For the wider area The Grace World View - Georgia Georgia is located in southwestern Asia on the eastern shore of the Black Sea. It borders on Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkey. The terrain is primarily mountainous, and the climate is warm. Slightly less than 5 million people live in Georgia. The total population is shrinking in size. Georgia is a mixture of several ethnic groups but native Georgians are by far the largest group. Ethnic strife has been evident in recent years. Georgia is blessed with good soil and climate for agriculture. Hydro-electric power is also widely available. Unfortunately, decades under communism and civil unrest since independence has kept the economy in turmoil. Georgia has spent most of its existence subjected to a foreign power. Most recently, it was part of the Soviet Union finally gaining independence in 1991. It now operates as a republic. Since independence, ethnic unrest and power struggles brought about civil war. In most respects the people have freedom of religion. The Georgian Orthodox church has dominated for centuries. The church is largely nominal and has at times sought to limit the activities of other religious groups. Under Soviet rule, many church leaders compromised with the government. Those who didn't were persecuted, and many were martyred. Compromise with the communists has caused many to distrust the church. There is a large Muslim community representing over 20% of the population. Few have sought to reach these people. Evangelicals are few in number - slightly more than 1% - but have been growing.
Incitement to religious hatred law to be debated in the House of Lords The Government is attempting, for the third time, to introduce an incitement to religious hatred law. Its plans are contained in the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill which completed its Commons stages in July and will be debated for the first time in the Lords on 11th October. The proposal is opposed by people of many different religions and none. A religious hatred law would harm religious liberty and freedom of speech. The Government first proposed this law in 2001 β following the terrorist atrocities of September 11th. But following widespread criticism and two defeats in the House of Lords the Government dropped the plans. A second attempt in early 2005 was dropped due to opposition from the Lords, combined with a lack of time before the General Election.
