A Thought From the Word

O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good.” Job 7:7

These are the words of a suffering, bewildered, beaten-down Job. The words seemed to fit the experience of his life at that point. The prospect that his situation would improve or that his life would see joy and peace again seemed non-existent. There is only one problem with these words of Job: they weren’t true!

It’s not the best approach to look down self-righteously upon Job; he was suffering more than I (and probably you) ever have. But, it would be very wise of us to learn from his mistake. Job didn’t speak here from faith, but from sight. We always run into trouble when we do the same. Our window of vision is so inferior compared with God’s. God sees the past, present and future perfectly. He has wise and loving purposes for the lives of His children. Little did Job know that he would live for many more years after this time, and would experience great blessings of God above what he could have imagined.

The next time you are suffering, bewildered, beaten-down and you feel like repeating what Job said, remember the whole story of Job’s life! Does this mean that your life will end up just like Job’s? Not necessarily. But it does mean that God has good purposes for your life, believer. And even if great suffering defines the rest of your earthly pilgrimage, you will still see good. Greater good than you can imagine when you graduate from this life to the next. May God grant us all grace to walk by faith, and not by sight.
