A Thought From the Word
“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. ”
I Thessalonians 4:13
Paul teaches a powerful and comforting truth in this and the following verses regarding the dead in Christ, and the Savior’s triumphant return. But, notice the very first phrase, “I would not have you to be ignorant .” Ignorant is not being used in a derogatory sense, but in the literal sense of simply not knowing.
Paul’s pastoral heart (and God’s will as well) was that these believers know this vital, valuable truth. Their knowledge of it would comfort and strengthen their hearts. It would also cause them to have a completely different kind of sorrow than the world’s. Therefore, even in their grief, they (and we) could be witnesses for Christ.
Christian, God would not have you to be ignorant. He would not have you to be void of the precious truth He has revealed in the Scriptures. In His great mercy and love, God has given treasures of knowledge, even more than just that which is covered in this context, for His children. Throw off the excuses, make whatever sacrifices are needed to dig deeply into God’s word. Don’t be ignorant! May we not have to hear what God said about Israel of old, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (Hosea 4:6).
