"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." O WHAT A SAVIOR
TUNE TO "Away in a Manger" 11.11.11.11.
WORDS BY Jim Byrd
1. Christ Jesus the Savior came down from above, In covenant mercy and infinite love; The Lord of creation a servant became, To save all His people, O praise His great name.
2. Enthroned in His beauty and all glorious, The God of all mercy was made like to us; The Word was made flesh and laid glory aside, What grace and affection for His chosen bride.
3. Our Prophet, High Priest and our eternal King, Descended from heaven salvation to bring; Emmanuel came, the Lord with us on earth, Behold a great myst’ry, the dear Savior’s birth.
4. O what a Redeemer is Jesus our Lord, He paid all our sin-debt, our souls He restored; Redeemed by His blood, He our ransom has paid, And clothed in His beauty His saints are arrayed.
5. All praise to our Savior, our Refuge is He, In Christ we are safe throughout eternity; Come now and adore Him Who made us His choice, Let all of His people in Jesus rejoice. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
THE DEATH OF SIN
The death of sin could not be accomplished except by the death of Christ Jesus our Savior, and His death could not happen except all the sins of His people be laid upon Him (Isaiah 53:6). Since all of the sins of His people met upon the Savior, and He did in fact die under the curse of the broken law, then our sins had to die with Him; and when He arose, He came back without them. "And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin" (1 John 3:5). It is written that "What the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh" (Romans 8:3). Note carefully the wording; it was not the Son of God Who condemned or judged sin, but that One who sent Him, God the Father, the righteous Judge. The death of Christ was a judicial act of God. The justice of God, finding the sins of His people upon the eternal Surety, charged Him with those sins and demanded satisfaction for them. The condemnation of our sins took place when Christ Jesus suffered, bled and died in our stead. In that way the law was satisfied, sin was expiated, forgiveness was secured, righteousness was brought in, reconciliation was accomplished, and redemption was obtained. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
"CALL HIS NAME JESUS"
(Matthew 1:21)
"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins."
I detain the Reader at this scripture, while observing the name of our adorable Lord, and the reason assigned by the angel wherefore He is called Jesus, just to remark, what a precious name it hath been in all ages of the church; it still is, and will be through all eternity. It is the same name, in point of significancy, as that of Joshua, or Hoshea, both meaning a Savior. One of the old writers hath made a sweet and comprehensive sense of it, when he said, "in the name of Jesus the whole gospel is hid: for it is the light, the food, the medicine, yea, the very life of the soul." And if the Reader also makes his full remarks upon the angel’s words, he will say the same. "Thou shalt call His name Jesus!" Wherefore? It is immediately answered. "For He shall save His people from their sins." Now observe the beauty and blessedness of those expressions. Jesus had a people then, even before His incarnation. And it was known that this people would be sinners. And a provision was therefore made, in the grace of God, for their recovery, even before they had a being. And the very office of Jesus is to save them from their sins. Yea, the very reason why He is called Jesus is to save them on this account. Precious Lord Jesus, I would say, Oh give Thy people grace to see Thee, and to know Thee, in this Thy most blessed name, and never to hear that sweet name, or to call upon it, without connecting it with the angel’s words. "Thou shalt call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins." –Robert Hawker ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
PRECIOUS
"Precious" is a descriptive word meaning held in great esteem, especially valuable, dear and highly prized. It is used several times in the epistles of Peter. "He (Christ) is precious" (1 Peter 2:7); "precious blood" (1 Peter 1:19); "precious faith" (2 Peter 2:1); and "precious promises" (2 Peter 1:4). ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
