Why School Reforms Don't Work

The new school year begins with a string of excited announcements concerning Race-to-the-Top Education Reforms. But almost everybody is pretty burned out on School Reforms. The only problem with School Reforms is that they don’t work. This according to a recent article in Newsweek Magazine, “Why School Reform Doesn’t Work.” This country now spends three times what they spent in the 1960’s for educating a child (adjusted for inflation), with no improvements. Whatever improvements are seen in the K-6 years are erased in the high school years. The conclusion to the article - "The larger cause of failure is almost unmentionable: shrunken student motivation. Students, after all, have to do the work."

Again and again, we are forced to return to the same problem – character. Since the character of the nation is in free fall, and the family has disintegrated, we are facing the inexorable decline of education (not to mention the economic vitality of the nation).

This is why I would expect home education to continue to grow at least at the rate we have seen since 2000. Recent numbers indicate homeschooling as doubled in size over ten years. If this happens over the next ten years, we should expect between 5,000,000 and 6,000,000 homeschoolers by the year 2020.
