Upon the Cross Tune: "THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATION" 7.6.7.6. Words by Jim Byrd
1. Upon the cross our Savior, Defeated ev’ry foe; He died to save His people, And paid the debt we owed. The sword of justice pierced Him, God put His Son to grief; He poured on Him His vengeance, And gave Him no relief.
2. Upon the cross Christ suffered, For sheep who went astray; And by His blood most precious, He washed our sins away. The law cannot condemn us, For in our place He died; He fully honored justice, The law He magnified.
3. Upon the cross of Calv’ry, Our Lord was crucified; His blood has sealed our pardon, He now is glorified. Sing of His lovingkindness, Of His redeeming grace; Sing praises to the Savior, Who saved His chosen race.
What If???? Thus far in our lifetimes we have made countless choices. Each of us has often reflected upon some of those decisions and wondered, "What if I had gone that other direction? What if I had not made that choice? What if I had taken that other job? What if I had not decided to do what I did?" What if I had not done this or that?" Consider this. It is written, "The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in His way" (Psalm 37:23). All who are in Christ Jesus are good, for we are made the "righteousness of God in Him." That being true, we have it on divine authority that every step of life’s journey has been ordained by our Lord in His infinite wisdom, and we are being guided in that way by His unerring providence and boundless power. There is no such thing as luck or fate; God directs our path according to the way He determined in old eternity. I would never condone or excuse our sins and failures, but even those things are factored into the eternal scheme. May God teach us, therefore, to delight in the way that providence takes us, and rejoice that the Lord has such affection for us that at no time will He allow us to deviate from the path marked out for us. The route in which He has led us has brought us to hear and believe the glorious gospel of free grace, of full salvation, of accomplished redemption and of righteousness brought in by the death and resurrection of Christ. Child of God, the direction your life has taken is absolutely the best one for you, otherwise, your heavenly Father would have led you another way. May we learn, like Paul, true contentment and rejoice in the Lord always (Philippians 4:11).
God Is Unsearchable - Job 11:7 "Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?" He is an incomprehensible Being, infinite and immense, whose nature and perfections our finite understandings cannot possibly form any adequate conceptions of, and whose counsels and actings we cannot therefore, without the greatest presumption, pass a judgment upon. We that are so little acquainted with the divine nature are incompetent judges of the divine providence; and, when we censure the dispensations of it, we talk of things that we do not understand. We cannot find out God; how dare we then find fault with Him? God is unsearchable. The ages of His eternity cannot be numbered, nor the spaces of His immensity measured; the depths of His wisdom cannot be fathomed, nor the reaches of His power bounded. The brightness of His glory can never be described, nor the treasures of His goodness reckoned up. This is a good reason why we should always speak of God with humility and caution and never prescribe to Him nor quarrel with Him. Why, we should be thankful for what He has revealed of Himself and long to be where we shall see Him as He is (1 Corinthians 13:9-10). It is quite out of our reach to comprehend God’s nature. Such knowledge is too wonderful for us, Psalm 139:6. We cannot fathom God’s designs, nor find out the reasons of His proceedings. His judgments are a great deep. –Matthew Henry
1 Corinthians 2:2, "For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." We preach the person of Christ and His work. Christ could not save us apart from His substitutionary work, and His death is only beneficial to us because of His glorious person. We do not preach Christ without His cross-death nor the cross-death without Christ. "We preach Christ crucified" (1 Corinthians 1:23).
