ZEBULON BAPTIST CHURCH Weekly Bulletin Sunday, February 7th, 2010
Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them. The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments. Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name. Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts. Psalm 119:129-134
CONTENDING FOR THE TRUTH Contending for the truth against the errors of modern religion is the duty of God's servants. I hope our spirit is one of genuine love to all the chosen of God; but today's rule of charity which requires us to keep silent on certain points in order to avoid controversy, I utterly despise. It is treason to the Lord Jesus to be silent on any point where He has spoken and the honor of His gospel is concerned. It is easy on the flesh to deal in generalities, to denounce hyper-this or hyper-that, and to claim to be a friend to all; but it is required of the loyal servant of King Jesus to maintain His crown-rights and to stand up for His gospel of glory and grace. Pastor Henry T. Mahan
CHRIST IS ALL Looking at my sin, I see Christ as my atonement and only Christ. Looking at God's Law, I see Christ as my righteousness, my only righteousness. I'm not making up what I can't provide; He is my only righteousness. Looking at God's justice, He is my justification. Looking at death, He is my life. Looking at the grave, He is my resurrection. Looking at eternity, He is my hope (from a recent TV transcribed message). Pastor Henry T. Mahan
WHAT JESUS HAS DONE FOR ME Let me tell you what Jesus has done for me. He assumed my human nature so I could partake of His divine nature (John 1:1, 14; 2 Peter 1:4). He became poor so I could become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). He was born of a woman so I could be born of God (Galatians 4:4; John 1:12f). He became the Son of Man so I could become a son of God (Luke 19:10; Galatians 3:26). He was born under the law of God so I could be free from the law of sin and death (Galatians 4:4; Romans 8:2). He was made sin for me so I could become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). He was condemned so I could be justified (Isaiah 53:11). He endured God's wrath so I could enjoy God's grace (Isaiah 53:4f; Romans 5:12-21). He died so I could live (Romans 5:8-10). He suffered the hell I deserve so I could enjoy Him in heaven (Psalm 18:4f; John 17:24). He saved me by His grace and gave me faith to believe in Him (Ephesians 2:8f). He did this for all who believe in Him. Do you? Daniel E. Parks, missionary to St.Croix
THOMAS WATSON 1602-1686 In August 1662 on orders from King Charles II, many useful and valuable ministers were ejected from their churches because they would not conform to the State Church.
Thomas Watson for 20 years had been Pastor of St. Stephens Church, Walbrook, London, England. The Sunday of "The great ejection" Watson preached the following words to his church.
"Now, I welcome the cross of Christ, welcome reproach, welcome poverty or whatever shall befall me. This morning I had a flock and you had a Pastor; but now, behold a Pastor without a flock and a flock without a Shepherd! This morning I had a house, now I have none. This morning I had a living, now I have none. ‘The Lord giveth the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord!'"
Watson continued his message to his congregation. "This doctrine that I have preached to you is:
•1. That Jesus Christ, who came into the world to save sinners, by His death, came also to sanctify them and to purge them from their sins.
•2. That those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, must be careful to maintain good works and to live a godly life (Titus 3:8).
•3. That faith in Christ is not such a slight, easy and empty thing as this mistaken world imagines, but it demands conformity of the whole man, heart and life to the Person of Christ.
•4. That whosever believes not in Christ; whosever is short of true and sincere faith and godliness cannot be saved.
This is the sum of my doctrine! This is the eternal truth of God! I hereby embark my whole soul and life, desiring to be found in Christ Jesus, for Christ is All and in All" (Col. 3:11). Submitted by Pastor Henry T. Mahan, Jan. 2010
SALVATION IS OF THE LORD My heart shall rejoice in thy salvation (Psalm 13: 5).
This is the message of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, salvation is of the Lord and His people do rejoice in Him (Phil. 3:7-9; 2 Tim. 1:9).
•1. He is the Author of it, before there was a sinner there was a Saviour; before Adam fell in sin, Christ stood as the everlasting Surety (Heb. 7:22; 13:20 Rev. 13:8).
•2. He is the Accomplisher of salvation, He bought us with His own blood and righteousness (John 19:30; Acts 20:28; Heb. 1:3).
•3. He is the Applier of salvation, He will have mercy on whom He will (Rom. 9:13-16; Phil. 1:6).
•4. He is the Administer of salvation, we are kept by His will and power (John 6:37-39; 10:27-30; 17:2; 1 Peter 1:5).
•5. He is the Advocate of salvation; He ever lives to make intercession for us (Rom. 8:28-35; 1 Tim. 2:51 John 2:1-2). Pastor Tom Harding
