Glory, glory, I'm forgiven;

All my sins are washed away.

Christ, by His great blood atonement,

All my sin has put away.

Sin imputed to my Savior,

When He died upon the tree,

As the Substitute for sinners,

God will not impute to me.

Robed in Christ's own righteousness;

I'm a child, an heir of heaven,

Saved by God's almighty grace.

Christ's obedience to the Father

Is imputed now to me;

In God's sight I'm pure and holy,

He declares me so to be.

Glory, glory, I'll not perish,

In Christ's hands I am secure;

He who saved me, sure, will keep me;

By God's grace I shall endure.

This is not a vain presumption;

I just take Him at His word;

Christ has sworn, "They shall not perish

Who believe on Me their Lord."

Discourse on the Wisdom of God

In Murmuring and Impatience

One demands a reason, why he hath this or that cross? Why he hath been deprived of such a comfort, lost such a venture, languishes under such a sickness, is tormented with such pains, oppressed by tyrannical neighbors, is unsuccessful in such designs? In these, and such like, the wisdom of God is questioned and defamed. All impatience is a suspicion, if not a condemnation of the prudence of God's methods, and would make human feebleness and folly the rule of God's dealing with his creatures. This is a presuming to instruct God, and a reproving him for unreasonableness in his proceedings, when his dealings with us do not exactly answer our fancies and wishes; as if God, who made the world in wisdom, lacked skill for the management of his creatures in it (Job 40:2): "Shall he that contends with the Almighty, instruct him? He that reproveth God, let him answer it." We that are not wise enough to know ourselves, and what is needful for us; presume to have wit enough to guide God in his dealing with us. The wisdom of God rendered Job more useful to the world by his afflictions, in making him a pattern of patience, than if he had continued him in a confluence of all worldly comforts, wherein he had been beneficial only in communicating his morsels to his poor neighbors. All murmuring is a fastening error upon unerring Wisdom.

Man's religion is to build up the creature. God's religion is to throw the creature down in the dust of self-abasement, and to glorify Christ.

MY ONLY HOPE

It came to my mind again recently that I can find no hope or consolation of any kind in anything that I have done or am. There is not a single thing about me that would commend me to God or warrant His blessing me in the least way. But then I also had this thought, I can find no hope or consolation in the fact that I see this is my case or feel it to be true! There is no hope to be found in my knowing this, acknowledging it to be true or in any feeling it might generate in me. I am nothing and this gives me no hope. I feel it to be true and any and all feeling it to be so gives me no hope. I must confess as the hymn-writer, "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness." Honestly! The only hope for a sinner like me is a believing look at the Lord Jesus Christ! Our only hope is in the grace of God, in His covenant mercies and in His unchanging love. My hope is not even in my believing on Him but in HIM! I can only lay down my head and rest on the promises of God in Christ crucified. No one, not even myself, can lay anything to my charge if "It is Christ that died." When I am under the weight of my sinful self, I thank God He gives me grace and faith so that, even then, I cannot but hope in Him who came into the world to save sinners, even me the chief of sinners!
