COME UNTO HIM
Matthew 5: 1:...his disciples came unto him.
If you would truly be a disciple you must be taught of Christ Jesus the Lord. Therefore you must come unto HIM. Do not come for carnal wisdom, for physical healing, for temporal well-being or for any worldly thing, only HIM. Do not come to a system of doctrines, to a church, to a denomination, to a creed, only come unto HIM. Come unto him in his holy mountain by prayer and in his word. Come unto HIM to have HIM teach you of HIS works and of HIS ways. His disciples came unto HIM: no other reasons are given, no other motives, only HIM. What does the Master do for those who come unto HIM? Matthew 5: 2: And HE opened HIS mouth, and taught them.
BLESSED
Read Matthew 5: 3-12
The word "blessed" here means happy because of the supreme favor of God. When God blesses, according to his purpose and power, he does not well-wish, but effectually makes sinners to be possessors of his blessing. These "blessings" are not stages that a believer strives for one-by-one or gradually attains or arrives at little-by-little. This is what a believer IS whom God has effectually blessed.
- Every believer IS poor in spirit
- Every believer DOES mourn.
- Every believer IS meek.
- Every believer DOES hunger and thirst after righteousness.
- Every believer IS merciful.
- Every believer IS pure in heart.
- Every believer IS a peacemaker
- Every believer IS persecuted for righteousness sake.
If these characteristics describe you then you are happy because God has supremely favored you.
Blessings are on the head of the righteous (Pr 10: 6.)
By pastor Daniel E. Parks
1. Blessings are on the head of the righteous, - But in all our fallen race "There is none righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:10). However, through the glorious incarnation of the Son of God there is one - and only one - "born of a woman, born under the law" (Galatians 4:4) who is indeed righteous: "Jesus Christ the righteous" (as He is called in 1 John 2:1). Jehovah has indeed poured His blessings onto the head of Christ, for He is the "blessed man" described in Psalm 1. And through the imputation of His righteousness to believers they are declared to be righteous (as in Romans 3:21ff), and have even "become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jehovah has therefore poured blessings on their heads also, for they are the "blessed men" described in The Beatitudes of Matthew 5:3-12.
2. This proverb also applies to Christ in His relationship to the "congregation of the righteous" (as saints are called in Psalm 1:5): He is the "head of the righteous" because "He is the head of the body, the church"; He has been blessed by Jehovah in such a way "that in all things He may have the preeminence" (Colossians 1:18).
CHRIST HAS ENTERED INTO HIS GLORY
Acts 17: 3: Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ (Read Acts 16: 13-40-17: 3.)
Christ called out some while he walked this earth so he sent Paul to Philippi and called out some. Christ willingly submitted to allow our wicked hands to send him to the grave so Christ gave Paul grace to willingly submit to those who threw him into prison. When Christ went into the grave the whole household of God died to the law, to sin and to death being baptized in him so through Paul being cast into prison Christ made an entire household to confess him in baptism. When Christ came out of the grave he came to comfort his brethren so when he freed Paul he sent Paul to his brethren in Lydia's house to comfort them. Then Christ begins sending this gospel further into the world and saving a great multitude at Thessalonica. This is Christ, in his ascension glory, governing all things great and small, declaring why he must needs have suffered and risen again from the dead. This is the Christ, I preach to you. This is the glory he has entered into. Believe on him!
POOR IN SPIRIT
Matthew 5: 3: Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
We are born into this world the first time rich in spirit. Though man was made by God and not God by us, though we were made of mere dust of the earth by God, though it was God who gave us the breath of life, though everything that was made was made by God and given to us, though our life depended upon God sustaining us (still does) yet, when we transgressed against God in the garden in Adam, we immediately became rich in our own estimation of ourselves. Man began to imagine God owes us something (Ps 10:4; Pro 30: 12; Isa 65: 6.)
The poor in spirit are blessed because God made them so when they were born the second time (Ez 11: 19, 20.) Our poorness was made known to us when God revealed that we have absolutely nothing to offer God: we need righteousness which we do not have and can not produce; we need our sins blotted out forever but we are too filthy to perform it; we need to be made holy to be accepted of God but we can not achieve it by any of our deeds.
Therefore the poor in spirit come to God fearing and trembling, respecting God as God, begging God to give freely whatever God is pleased to give. And God, who makes sinners to be poor in spirit, hears each sinner who is poor in spirit (Ps 34: 16-18; 51: 16, 17.) When is it that your earthly father gives to you? When you come boasting or begging? (Is 66: 2) Even so our heavenly Father gives the poor in spirit his Son and all that he requires of us in him.
Blessed are the poor in spirit. Happy are the poor in spirit. Theirs is the kingdom of God.
