Hebrews 13: 15: By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
We have been taught that true faith and service to God is spiritual and not fleshly. Spiritual worship involves the heart and God's grace--not fleshly, carnal services (v9.) Spiritual worship involves coming to Christ our Altar--not an earthly altar (v10.) Spiritual worship leaves ceremonialism, traditions, and works of the flesh behind and goes out of the camp to Christ through faith (v11-13.) So since we do not look to an earthly priest, to physical sacrifices commanded in the law of Moses then what can the believer offer?
Anyone who has tasted of the Lord's grace desires to praise God for how thankful we are! Truly, one of the reasons God has saved us is to offer up sacrifices to him. But what kind of sacrifices? Like all other aspects of worship the sacrifice spoken of here is, you guessed it, spiritual. 1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 10: 15:...that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. Are you fallen in iniquity? The Holy Spirit says, Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips (Hos 14:2.)The Psalmists said, I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs (Psalm 69:30-31.) Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing (Ps 107:21-22.)
Are you seeing what this praise, what this fruit of the lips is? It is praising his name, magnifying his name, praising his goodness and his wonderful works toward the children of men. The LORD is not interested in hearing us speak of ourselves, our goodness, or our works but only the sacrifice of his Son. Isaiah offered the sacrifice when he said, Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation (Is 12:2.) The Psalmist offered the fruit of his lips when he said, The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works (Ps 145:17.)Everything the believer has been freely given is Christ Jesus the Son of God our Lord and Savior. Not only in and by Christ Jesus, but is Christ Jesus. Let us thank God for the LORD our righteousness.
