When the Lord gives us a new heart he gives us a spirit which makes us to know that though our fleshly desire is to retaliate when offended, the fact that we have been accepted by Christ paying the debt of our injustice toward God ever constrains us to trust God instead of the sword of our flesh.
BELIEVING IS NO SMALL THING!
By Henry Mahan
To believe God is no small thing! It is the evidence of a heart reconciled unto God; it is the proof of our being weaned from our own works and deeds; it is a clear sign of the true conviction of sin; it is honoring to Christ, our only Redeemer; it is the essence of true worship; and it is the root of sincere obedience.
The person who believes God in spite of his sin and infirmities, who believes God in spite of fleshly wisdom and opposition, who believes God come what may, gives the Lord God more honor and glory than the cherubim and seraphim in their continual adoration.
DO YOU THINK FAITH A SMALL THING? How is it then that our Lord said, "He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life?" How is it that a whole nation perished in the wilderness because of UNBELIEF? How is it that we are said to be "justified by faith," and "He that believeth not shall be damned?" Faith is the parent grace. Whatever you put in second place, faith must have the first consideration; for it is not a small thing - - IT IS YOUR LIFE! "If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believeth." John Flavel said, "The soul is the life of the body. Faith is the life of the soul. Christ is the life of faith."
PRETENDED PIETY
Isaiah 7: 10: Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying, 11: Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. 12: But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.
Ahaz knew two enemy kings were ready to attack him in Jerusalem. Yet, when the gospel was declared to him and he was commanded to believe on Christ the Lord in whom God promised to destroy these enemies, he would not. He used the excuse that he would not tempt the Lord.
Fact is Ahaz was one of the most religious kings ever to sit upon the throne of David in the house of Judah. He wore his religion with pride. He filled Jerusalem with graven images. His heart was fat with pride, his ears dull of hearing the word of the LORD. Therefore when he shut his eyes in a pretense of piety it was really because he abhorred the gospel of Christ Jesus the Lord. The gospel took salvation out of his hands and placed it totally in the hands of Immanuel. Isaiah's gospel declared that Ahaz could in no way establish himself. Still, in willful rebellion against the only God who could save him, Ahaz turned away to the king of Assyria for help. He turned from the Lord and trusted in the effort of his own hand, the wisdom of his own mind, the way that seemed right unto him. He perished.
Are you pretending to be righteous when in fact you think you are wiser than God? Are you refusing to ask God to give you assurance because your assurance is really in something you have already done? The word of the Lord to Ahaz is as straight forward as it gets, "If ye will not believe, ye shall not be established." May the Lord be pleased to establish you that you may believe on Christ and be saved. There is salvation in no other.
A Gentle Answer Turns Away Wrath
By: Joe Terrell
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1
We need go no farther than our relationship with God to see the truth of this. So long as His word to us was the Law, so full of harshness and challenge, we would not be reconciled to Him, but rather, we would rebel all the more, becoming more and more opposed to God. But the moment He spoke to our hearts in the gentle tones of the gospel, our hearts were broken, our rebellious wrath dissipated and we were reconciled. As Paul wrote, the message of reconciliation is, "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us in order that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him." (2 Corinthians. 5:21) Was it not this gentle, Divine answer that turned away your wrath from God? Then, brethren, if God was so kind as to speak such a gentle word to us, can we not speak similar words to our brethren? And can we not expect the same result? So long as we speak to one another in terms of demands followed by judgments for failing to meet those demands, WE WILL STIR UP ANGER AMONG OURSELVES; but the moment we begin to speak gentle words of kindness, forgiveness, and acceptance, the anger goes away and a brother is reconciled. So, let's just do it!
