Dear Praying Friends,

The stately, middle-aged woman arose and thanked us for inviting her and her family to our service. She then told us of the hunger in her country for the Word of God and expressed her thanks for all the missionary efforts to reach her people and how through those efforts her family was reached with the gospel. I was truly humbled to be in the presence of René Koffi and her extended family, not particularly because of their social station, but because of the nobility of character and moral courage of these Christians converted from Islam to evangelical Christianity in a country literally torn by religious strife where one fully understands the meaning of the"sacrifices of the Christian faith."

René Koffi is the wife of Charles Koffi, the Ambassador of the Ivory Coast. With her was her sister, Nadia, and another sister whose name I have difficulty spelling as well as their male cousins, Abdul and Mani. Also attending the service was Evelyn, who already attends our church, and Emanuel, her nephew. Evelyn translated René Koffi's testimony to us. Evelyn had also helped write the invitations we had sent in French.

What a wonderful surprise it was to find out that they were Christians. I was wondering how they were going to respond as I preached the message in Spanish while our visiting missionary, Ruben Castillo, translated in French. I had also asked Bro. Castillo to include salvation in his testimony that he gave both in Spanish and French. I had preached in my message of the 900 million souls under the dark shroud of Islam and how much of the wars in the Ivory Coast and other countries in Africa are attempts to extend that shroud so that even less would have the chance to hear the gospel. Little did I know how well they understood from experience that shroud of spirttual blindness of which I spoke.

This diplomatic family have what are basically Bible studies in the embassy on Sundays as they have no church to go to in French. We hope this Sunday's meeting will be the beginning of a long, lasting friendship between their family and ours.
