Last night, I had the wonderful opportunity to give a gospel tract to the front running presidential candidate the July 2 election.
Before I tell the story, I want to ask you to please pray for the presidential elections here in Mexico. Felipe Calderon is the best candidate of the three running, for several reasons. The one that is the scariest, Lopez Obrador, was until recently first place in the polls for many months. He is of the Hugo Chavez, Eva Morales mold -- a leftist populist whose presidency would be disastrous. The other, Madrazo, is from the old corrupt party that was in power for 70 years. He has a lot of baggage from the past.
Felipe Calderon is from the same party as President Fox, pro-business, and would continue many of the economic policies of Fox. I believe he is honest as Fox and would do even more to get rid of the corruption than Fox. The only thing I disagree with on Fox is his immigration policy, but the President has to look after the interest of his citizens.
Calderon is a smart campaigner, well financed, and a forceful speaker. He is clear-headed and I believe will be a great leader and an even more effective president than Fox. He knows much more about dealing with the legislature which has been obstructionist to a lot of good initiatives of Fox.
Calderon has the support of the rich and middle class and his support among the poor is even growing as he is the candidate of employment. Also, his campaign slogan "clean hands" dares people to dig up dirt on him knowing that he has an honest record.
Now to the story. Felipe Calderon's party had a political rally in the tennis court of the apartment complex in front of our house. As hundreds were there, three of us from the church took several tracts and passed them out. Many of our church people were there at the rally. They would come up to me to greet me during the rally, so much that the people around probably thought I was some party official or something.
My desire was to be able to get a tract into Calderon's hand. I remember when Bob Dole was campaigning for president and I was able to ask him of his spiritual condition. I was hoping to get a similar chance with Calderon.
Before the speech at his coming, I was lined up with others, but only got to a yard away from him. When he came off the stage, I once again got close to him, but there were swarms of people and an older lady almost got knocked down. By the time I got people to move away from her and helped her, Calderon had slipped passed us.
I had one last chance, as he got into the mini-van alone with only the driver and had his window rolled down. I got up to where the vehicle was going to pass by and where the vehicle was going past the last swarm of people. It was the perfect moment as I had his undivided attention and I handed him the tract with my business card in it and said, "I'm praying for you." After that moment passed by, the car took off picking up speed with Calderon looking down at the tract. We returned to our house where several of our church prayed with us that Calderon would take advantage of that time alone in the mini-van to read the tract and trust Christ.
Please pray for the elections and, that if Calderon becomes president that God give him wisdom, courage, and above all, salvation.
